Edinburgh, Fountainbridge United Free Church originated with mission work from Free St George's. A Free Church charge was sanctioned in 1853 and a church built in the following year. The congregation split twice, in 1865 and 1872, to follow successive ministers, in the second case leading to its downgrading to a preaching station between 1872 and 1874. The United Free congregation transferred to Candlish church, Merchiston in 1901, leaving their former buildings to become St George's Home Mission, which itself was raised to full status in 1927. This passed to the Church of Scotland as Edinburgh Fountainbridge, which dissolved in 1974. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Edinburgh and the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. |
