Girvan Free Church originated with a quoad sacra church built in 1842, whose members adhered to the Free Church at the Disruption. The congregation was weakened by divisions over the controversial figure of its first minister, Peter Hately Waddell (1817-1891), but built a church of its own in 1857. It passed successively to the United Free Church, as Girvan Chalmers, and to the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge, which was in the presbytery and synod of Ayr, united with Girvan Trinity as Girvan St Andrew's in 1947. |
