history |
Linlithgow, First Associate Congregation began with a Secession congregation serving a large area of central Scotland and based at Craigmailen, then an isolated spot between Linlithgow and Bathgate. At the Breach of 1747 over the burgess oath its minister adhered to the Antiburghers, but most of the congregation remained as Burghers. For a time the dissidents from Linlithgow worshipped with a newly formed Burgher congregation in Torphichen, but in 1775 the first minister of Linlithgow West (Burgher) Church was ordained. It passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, in the latter case as Linlithgow Trinity, which in 1917 united with Linlithgow East as Linlithgow Craigmailen. The Church of Scotland charge, which was in the presbytery of Linlithgow and Falkirk and the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale, united with Linlithgow St Ninian's in 1954 as Linlithgow St Ninian's-Craigmailen. |
