Stow (Burgher) United Presbyterian Church originated with a disputed crown presentation to the parish church in 1732, which led to a strong local adherence to the Associate Presbytery in 1738. In 1740 this group took possession of a former malt barn, thatched with heather, which became their place of worship for the next eighty years. Their first minister was ordained in 1740. The congregation passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, in the latter case as Stow South, which united with Stow North as Stow United Free in 1901. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Galashiels and the synod of Merse and Teviotdale. |
