The congregation of Dalton Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries, was first established in 1862 when a Free Church mission station was erected at Dalton. Dalton Free Church was built in 1862, the congregation having initially worshipped in buildings connected with Dalton Meal Mill, and the charge was later sanctioned in 1868. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Dalton became Dalton United Free Church and in 1904 Dalton United Free joined with the congregation of Hightae, under the name of Hightae and Dalton, and under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Annandale. Following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Dalton was dropped from the title of the united congregation, and the charge was reduced in status in 1952. |
