Stoneykirk Free Church originated at the Disruption of 1843, when the minister and congregation 'came out' and adhered to the Free Church. A church building was erected in 1844 and a manse built in 1846. The charge passed to the United Free church in 1900 as Stoneykirk United Free Church, and when the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church in 1929, the congregation took the name of Sandhead Church of Scotland to distinguish it from the existing Church of Scotland charge at Stoneykirk. Two unions then took place; the first with Ardwell in 1935 to form Ardwell-Sandhead Church of Scotland; and the second in 1974 with the existing Stoneykirk charge, the united congregation keeping the name Stoneykirk Church of Scotland. The congregation linked with that of Kirkmaiden in 1988. |
