Edinburgh St Columba's Free Church was established at the Disruption in 1843 when the minister and whole congregation of St Columba's Gaelic chapel of ease adhered to the Free Church. They congregation initially used the parish church for worship until December 1843, then the High School until February 1845 when they moved to a church in Lothan road vacated by Free St George's. A new church in Cambridge Street was built and opened in 1851. In 1864 the congregation became known as St Columba's. In 1900 following the union of the Free Church with the United Presbyterian Church to form the United Free Church, the church became Edinburgh St Columba's United Free Church. In 1929 the United Free Church joined the Church of Scotland. The congregation united with that of St Oran's on 4 July 1948 taking the name of The Highland Church of Scotland. A further union occurred in 1956 with Tolbooth St John's under the name of Highland Tolbooth St John's. |
