Perth: St Stephen's Free Church was established at the Disruption in 1843 when the minister and almost the entire congregation of the Gaelic church in Perth 'came out'. The congregation used the Guild Hall and later a church in Kinnoul Street as places of worship. A church was erected in 1846 and a manse in 1852. A new church was built in 1878 and the name became St Stephen's in 1886 at which time the Gaelic service was discontinued. In 1900 following the union of the Free Church with the United Presbyterian Church, the charge became Perth: St Stephen's United Free Church. In 1929 the United Free Church joined the Church of Scotland. The church became Perth: St Stephen's Church of Scotland. In 1954 the congregation was transported to the Church Extension Area of Muirton. A church was opened in 1954. In 1991 St Stephen's was united with Perth: St Andrews as Perth: St Stephen's and St Andrew's. |
