Abernyte church was formed by the union of Abernyte North and Abernyte South in 1933. Abernyte church is in the Presbytery of Dundee, which was in the synod of Angus and Mearns until the abolition of synods in 1992.
Abernyte North: Abernyte church existed before the Reformation. It is likely that the manse was repaired in 1666 and an addition was made in 1820. Abernyte church was renamed Abernyte North in 1929.
Abernyte South: After 1843 free church services were provided in the parish. In May 1845 the charge was combined with the preaching station at Rait in the Presbytery of Perth and sanctioned by the General Assembly under the name Abernyte and Rait Free Church. Initially worshipping in Southfield granary, the congregation bought a church building in 1847 to be used as a temporary place of worship. The first minister was appointed in 1850 and the church erected in 1854. A manse was obtained in 1855 and the church building was enlarged in 1884. Abernyte Free became Abernyte United Free church in 1900 and Abernyte South in 1929.
Abernyte: Both Abernyte North and Abernyte South church buildings continued to be used following the union in 1933. They were used on alternate Sundays as the congregation's place of worship until 1950 when Abernyte South church and manse were sold. In 1983 the charge was linked with Inchture and Kinnaird linked with Longforgan. |
