Greenock Trinity Associate (Burgher) congregation was formed in 1791 when 360 people of Greenock petitioned the Associate Synod for sermon. A place of worship had already been erected and the petitioners were erected into a congregation in 1793. The first minister, Robert Jack (d 1837), was inducted on 14 October 1794. In 1820 the Associate (Burgher) Synod and General Associate (Antiburgher) Synod united to form the United Secession Church. In 1847 following the union of the United Secession Church with the Relief Church, the United Presbyterian Church was established. In 1893 to mark the centenary of Greenock Trinity, special services were conducted and a 'Historical Sketch' of the congregation published. In 1900 the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church joined to form the United Free Church. This congregation became Greenock Trinity United Free Church in the Presbytery of Greenock. Following the union in 1929 of the United Free Church with the Church of Scotland, Greenock Trinity Church of Scotland erected a hall in 1930. A manse was purchased in 1949. In 1967 the charge was united with Greenock St Andrew's as Greenock St Andrews. |
