Paisley: George Street United Secession Church originated as a congregation which seceded in 1800 from the Associate (Burgher) congregation at Abbey Hill, Paisley. The congregation continued to be supplied by the Associate (Burgher) Synod. A church was erected in George Street in 1822. In 1835 the members voted to join the United Secession Church. The first minister of George Street United Secession Church was John Boyd. In 1839, following the departure of Reverend Boyd, the congregation was united at mutual request with Paisley: New Street United Secession Church, under the name of George Street Church. The minister of New Street Church, Robert Cairns (d 1857), continued as minister of the joint congregation. In 1847 the United Presbyterian Church was established through the union of the United Secession Church and the Relief Church. In 1900, following the union of the United Presbyterian Church with the Free Church, Paisley: George Street became Paisley George Street United Free Church. In 1929 the United Free Church joined the Church of Scotland. In 1929 a new hall was opened. In 1958 the congregation were transported to Paisley Glenburn church extension. |
