Loreburn Street General Associate (Antiburgher) congregation was formed in Dumfries sometime between 1757 and 1760. A church was erected in 1760. The first minister, Thomas Herbertson (d 1762), was ordained on 29 September 1761. From 1761 the congregation of Closeburn was joined to this and received sermon every third Sabbath. In 1820 the General Associate (Antiburgher) Synod united with the Associate Synod (Burgher) to form the United Secession Church and in 1847 the United Secession Church joined the Relief Church to form the United Presbyterian Church. In 1900 Loreburn Street United Presbyterian Church became Dumfries Loreburn United Free Church, Presbytery of Dumfries and Penpont, following the union of the United Presbyterian Church with the Free Church. In 1929 the majority the United Free Church rejoined the Church of Scotland, although some congregations including Dumfries Loreburn adhered to the United Free Church (Continuing). |
