Brechin East Free Church in the Presbytery of Brechin was established at the Disruption in 1843 when the minister and congregation of Brechin East church extension 'came out'. They continued to worship in the church building until 1855 when the Church of Scotland reclaimed it. In 1856 a new church was erected to provide a place of worship for the congregation. In 1900 the United Free Church was formed through the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church. In 1929 Brechin East United Free Church became Brechin St Columba's Church of Scotland in the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun, following the union of the United Free Church with the Free Church of Scotland. In 1948 Brechin St Columba's Church, in the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun, was united with Brechin West to form Brechin West and St Columba's Church of Scotland. The Brechin West church was sold and St Columba's retained. In 1971 Brechin West and St Columba's was linked with Brechin Gardner Memorial and East Church until 1974 when the two congregations were united under the name of Brechin Gardner Memorial West and St Columba's Church of Scotland, Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. In 1975 the church was renamed Brechin Southesk. In 1997 the name was changed to Brechin Gardner Memorial Church. (see CH2/1520) |
