First Free Church, Thurso, Caithness, was established in 1843 when Dr Walter Ross Taylor (1805-1896) and his large congregation joined the Free Church immediately after the Disruption. A church was built in the same year and a manse bought in 1850. In 1871 another new church was opened for worship in Olrig Street. The congregation joined the United Free Church on the union of the Free Church of Scotland with the United Presbyterian Church in 1900 and became Thurso First United Free Church. In 1929 on the union of most United Free churches with the Church of Scotland it became Thurso St Andrew's joining with Thurso St Peter's in 1951 to form Thurso St Peter's and St Andrew's. Both churches were used until St Andrew's was closed in 1968. |
