Greenlaw Free Church in the Presbytery of Duns and Chirnside, was formed when the minister, John Fairbairn and members of the congregation left the Church of Scotland at the Disruption in 1843. Initally a house was adapted as a place or worship and a church was erected and opened in 1844. In 1856 a new larger church was built in order to accommodate the congregation which was enlarged by union with an Original Secession church. The church was extended in 1863 and in 1880 and a manse was built in 1847. Following the union in 1900 of the Free Church with the United Presbyterian Church, the church became Greenlaw West United Free Church. On 1 May 1903 the charge was united with Greenlaw East, (formerly Greenlaw United Presbyterian Church) to become Greenlaw United Free Church which retained the Greenlaw West buildings. In 1929 the United Free Church united with the Church of Scotland and the congregation became Greenlaw Fairbairn Memorial Church of Scotland, Presbytery of Duns. In 1952 the congregation was united with Greenlaw Old as Greenlaw Church. |
