Coldingham United Associate (Burgher) Church was formed when Coldingham Relief Church congregation, formed in 1793, following a disagreement with the Relief Presbytery of Edinburgh concerning money owed to the first minister William Sharp in 1805. The Relief Presbytery supported the minister's claim that he was owed money and refused the congregation's petition for preachers and a moderation until the expenses were paid and the congregation submitted to arbitration. In response, the congregation petitioned the Burgher Presbytery of Coldstream for sermon, which was duly granted. The first minister of Coldingham United Associate (Burgher) Church was Robert Maclaurin who was ordained on 27 August 1807. In 1820 the United Secession Church was formed by the union of the Associate Synod and the General Associate Synod. In 1847 the United Secession Church joined the Relief Church to form the United Presbyterian Church. In 1900 Coldingham United Presbyterian Church became Coldingham United Free Church following the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church. In 1929 the United Free Church united with the Church of Scotland and this congregation became Coldingham St Andrew's Church of Scotland in the Presbytery of Edinburgh. In 1940 the charge was united with Coldingham Priory as Coldingham Church. The Coldingham St Andrew's church and manse were sold in 1952. In 1965 the congregation was linked with St Abb's. A new manse was purchased in 1973. In 1987 the charge was further linked with Eyemouth Church. |
