Most of Gorbals kirk session joined the Free Church at the Disruption in 1843. Initially the congregation met in the Baronial Hall, Main Street, but a new church was built in 1844. The congregation thrived and became too large for the church, so in 1891 they worshipped in the National Halls, also in Main Street, and the old church building was sold. A new church and halls were built in South Portland Street in 1898. When the United Presbyterian Church united with the Free Church in 1900 the charge became Gorbals United Free Church. The United Free Church passed back to the Established Church in 1929, and at that time this Session became known initially as Gorbals Macnicol Memorial Church of Scotland and then Macnicol Memorial Crotfoot Church of Scotland. When the charge was transported in 1935 and a new church and halls were built, it changed its name simply to Croftfoot Church of Scotland. |
