Brechin West Free Church, Presbytery of Brechin, was formed at the Disruption in 1843 when both ministers of the parish of Brechin seceded. The congregation originally worshipped in the Secession Church in Port Street until a new church was opened in 1844. A manse was built in 1867-1868. In 1900 the Free Church joined with the United Presbyterian Church and this charge became Brechin West United Free Church. A session house was added in 1914. In 1929, following the union of the United Free Church with the Church of Scotland, this congregation became Brechin West Church of Scotland. In 1948 Brechin West united with St Columba's to form Brechin West and St Columba's. The West church was sold and the St Columba's buildings and manse were retained. In 1974 the church was united with Brechin Gardner Memorial and East Church to form Brechin Gardner Memorial West and St Columba's Church. In 1975 it was renamed Brechin Southesk Church of Scotland. In 1997 the name was changed to Brechin Gardner Memorial Church. |
