Haymarket United Presbyterian Church was formed in 1869 as an extension church by the Presbytery of Edinburgh's Church Extension Committee. An iron church was purchased and opened in 1871. The congregation was formed in 1872 and the first minister was Thomas Kirk, inducted 29th April 1873. The iron church was crushed in a storm in 1874 and the congregation thenceforth worshipped in halls in the district until a new church was opened in December 1875. In 1900 following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church, the congregation became Haymarket United Free Church. A pipe organ was installed in 1917 and a manse purchased in 1922. In 1929 the United Free Church rejoined the Church of Scotland and Haymarket Church of Scotland was formed. In 1960 Haymarket united with Dalry Church of Scotland to form Dalry-Haymarket Church. In 1973 the church merged with St Bride's to form St Colm's. |
