A Free Church Mission Station was established at Abington in 1845 and the charge was sanctioned in 1866. Services took place initially in a school until the church of Abington and Crawfordjohn Free Church congregation, which sat within the Presbytery of Lanark, was erected in 1861. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Abington and Crawfordjohn Free Church was renamed Abington and Crawfordjohn United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Abington and Crawfordjohn United Free Church became Abington and Crawfordjohn Logan Church of Scotland. In 1930 a union was established with the charge of Crawfordjohn Old under the name of Crawfordjohn and Abington. After this local union the Crawfordjohn Old Church continued in use and the former Abington Free Church was transferred to the superiors and later demolished. In 1971 the congregation of Duneaton was formed by the triple union of Crawfordjohn and Abington, Wiston and Roberton, and Lamington and Wandel and further union followed in 1994 between Duneaton and Crawford, under the name of Glencaple. Additionally during 1994 Glencaple was linked with Lowther and the linked congregation of Glencaple Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lanark. |
