The congregation of Latheron Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Caithness, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister of the Parish, and the majority of the population of Latheron, adhered to the Free Church. Worship took place for a short time in the open air until a church was erected and opened in December 1843. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Latheron Free Church became Latheron United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Latheron United Free Church was renamed Latheron West Church of Scotland. In 1938 Latheron West formed a union with the congregation of Latheron Old, under the name of Latheron Church of Scotland. After this local union both churches remained in use alternately, the Old church in the summer months and the West church in the winter. In 1969 Latheron established a link with Berriedale and Dunbeath Ross and the linked charge of Latheron Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Caithness. |
