The congregation of Berriedale Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Caithness, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when Samuel Campbell, minister of Berriedale Parish Church, adhered to the Free Church. Worship took place in an old school house at Ramscrags for a number of years and it wasn't until 1857 that a site was secured upon which a church was built. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Berriedale Free Church became Berriedale United Free Church and in 1907 a new church and manse were built. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Berriedale United Free Church was renamed Dunbeath Ross Church of Scotland and in 1950 the congregation of Berriedale and Dunbeath Ross was formed by the union of Dunbeath Ross and Berriedale Parish Church of Scotland. After this local union both churches continued in use. In 1969 a link was established with the congregation of Latheron and the linked charge of Berriedale and Dunbeath Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Caithness. |
