The congregation of Kirkcudbright Associate (Burgher) Congregation originated in 1818 following the presentation of a petition in 1817, signed by a number of residents of Kirkcudbright, to the Burgher Presbytery of Annan, requesting the establishment of a congregation in the area. George Wood, the first minister of Kirkcudbright Burgher Church was ordained in 1820 and the church of the congregation was erected in 1822 at a cost of £1100. In 1847 Kirkcudbright Burgher Church became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Kirkcudbright United Presbyterian Church was renamed Kirkcudbright St Cuthbert's United Free Church, and in 1914 Kirkcudbright St Cuthbert's was united with the congregation of Kirkcudbright St Mary's, under the name of Kirkcudbright United Free Church of Scotland. After this local union the former St Mary's church continued in use as the place of worship for the united congregation and the former St Cuthbert's buildings were sold in 1917. Upon the union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland in 1929, Kirkcudbright United Free Church became Kirkcudbright St Mary's Church of Scotland and in 1983 the session of Kirkcudbright Church of Scotland was formed by the union of Kirkcudbright St Mary's and Kirkcudbright St Cuthbert's. The congregation of Kirkcudbright Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
