The congregation of Kirkcudbright Free Church, which sat within the Free Presbytery of Kirkcudbright, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister of the parish church and many of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. Both church and manse were built and opened in 1845-1846 however the first church was later replaced by a new building erected in 1874. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Kirkcudbright Free Church was renamed Kirkcudbright St Mary's United Free Church and in 1914 Kirkcudbright St Mary's was united with the congregation of Kirkcudbright St Cuthbert's, under the name of Kirkcudbright United Free Church of Scotland. After this local union the former St Mary's church continued in use as the place of worship for the united congregation and the former St Cuthbert's buildings were sold in 1917. Upon the union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland in 1929, Kirkcudbright United Free Church became Kirkcudbright St Mary's Church of Scotland and in 1983 the session of Kirkcudbright Church of Scotland was formed by the union of Kirkcudbright St Mary's and Kirkcudbright St Cuthbert's. The congregation of Kirkcudbright Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
