At the time of the Disruption, the minister of the parish of Cockburnspath adhered to the Free church, however the minister of the adjoining parish of Oldhamstocks chose to remain with the established church. As a result of the differing directions taken by the neighbouring ministers the former minister of Oldhamstocks, Andrew Baird, suffered considerable persecution, and a site for the purpose of erecting a building to house a Free Church congregation was refused. A church however was built within the village of Oldhamstocks when a feu was given by an adherent residing there, and a new church was later erected in Cockburnspath when a suitable site was finally obtained in 1890. In 1900, at the time of the Union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Cockburnspath and Oldhamstocks Free Church became Cockburnspath United Free Church and in 1901 the congregation was united with the session of Stockbridge, under the name of Cockburnspath and Stockbridge United Free. Following the 1929 union between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Stockbridge and Cockburnspath United Free was renamed Cockburnspath St John's and Innerwick North, Church of Scotland. Cockburnspath and Oldhamstock Free Church sat within the Presbytery of Haddington and Dunbar. |
