When the Burgher congregation of Yetholm transfered to the Original Burgher Presbytery, disputes between the minister and a significant number of his congregation reached such an intensity that a petition was presented to the Burgher Presbytery of Kelso, signed by 114 members of the church, requesting that they be taken under their inspection. The request was granted and accordingly the congregation of Yetholm (New Light) Burgher Church was established. Walter J.Hume, the first minister of the charge, was ordained in 1818 and the church was also built in 1818 with sittings for almost 500. In 1847 Yetholm Burgher (New Light) congregation became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Yetholm United Presbyterian was renamed Yetholm Border View and in 1914 Yetholm Border View was united with the congregation of Yetholm St James to form the session of Yetholm United Free Church. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Yetholm United Free became Yetholm St James's Church of Scotland and in 1940 the congregation of Yetholm Church of Scotland was formed by the union of Yetholm St James's and Yetholm Old. After this local union the former St James's Church was sold. In 1956 a link was established with the charge of Hownam and a further link followed in 1963 with Morebattle and also in 1974 with Linton. The linked congregation of Yetholm Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Jedburgh. |
