Edinburgh North Richmond Street United Presbyterian Church was established in 1844 when Thomas Stevenson, the minister of Bread Street Relief Church, broke away from his charge and took a number of his congregation with him. The break away group worshipped for a time in Carrubber's Close and in 1850 an application was presented to the United Presbyterian Presbytery requesting that they be formally recognised as a congregation. Consequently, the minister was inducted and a former dispensary in North Richmond Street was converted to serve as the church of North Richmond Street United Presbyterian. In 1867 the congregation of Henderson United Presbyterian joined with North Richmond Street. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, North Richmond Street United Presbyterian became North Richmond Street United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, North Richmond Street United Free Church became North Richmond Street Church of Scotland. In 1933 the congregation was transported to Craigmillar and the name was changed to that of Richmond Craigmillar Church of Scotland. After this move the former North Richmond Street church buildings were demolished. In 1973 a link was established with the charge of Newcraighall and in 1983 this arrangement was terminated in favour of a union between the two congregations. The united congregation remained under the name of Richmond Craigmillar and the congregation of Edinburgh Richmond Craigmillar Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
