St Ninians Relief Church originated in a dispute about the appointment of Reverend David Gargunnock to the parish. Nineteen of the twenty elders and a large proportion of the population seceded and in 1773 applied to the Relief Presbytery for membership. When the Relief Church united with the United Secession Church in 1847 the church became St. Ninians United Presbyterian Church and on the union of the United Presbyterian Church with the Free Church in 1900 became St Ninians South United Free Church. In 1928 the church united with the other St Ninians United Free Church, St Ninians North, to form St Ninians United Free Church. The union with the Church of Scotland caused a split in the congregation when it was decided that the new church, St George's, would worship only in the building previously occupied by St Ninians North United Free Church. A group formed themselves into a congregation of United Free (continuing) but were not allowed to use the old St Ninians South United Free building. This was converted into a furniture store and demolished in the late 1960s.The Kirk Session functioned in a similar way to Sessions of the Church of Scotland. |
