On the 20 July 1829 the Secession Presbytery of Lanark was petitioned by 110 residents of Crossford requesting that they be provided with sermon, not one of the petitioners belonged to the denomination however the wished to have sermon for a few weeks by way of an experiment. The request was granted and accordingly services commenced in Crossford in August 1829 and after this time regular service continued. In 1832 the first church of Crossford United Associate Congregation was erected at a cost of £350 and George Arnot, the first minister of the charge, was ordained in 1833. In 1847 Crossford United Associate became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Crossford United Presbyterian became Crossford West United Free Church and in 1919 a union was established with the congregation of Crossford South, under the name of Crossford United Free Church. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Crossford United Free Church became Crossford Church of Scotland and in 1973 a link was established with the congregation of Kirkfieldbank. The linked congregation of Crossford Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lanark. |
