At the time of the Disruption in 1843, Dr William Muir, minister of the parish church of Edinburgh St Stephen's, did not adhere to the Free Church however attempts were made by Free Church followers living in the area, along with those belonging to St Cuthbert's parish, to establish a Free Church congregation. After an initial lack of success a place of worship was secured in Wemyss Place and the first minister of St Stephen's Free Church was inducted in 1845. The congregation additionally carried out mission work in Jamaica Street. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Edinburgh St Stephen's Free Church became Edinburgh St Stephen's United Free Church and in 1901 a new church at Comely Bank was dedicated. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, St Stephen's United Free Church was renamed St Stephen's Comely Bank Church of Scotland. The congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
