In 1843 at the time of the Disruption the minister of Broxburn Parish Church did not adhere to the Free Church, but provision was made for people in the district who did. The Earl of Buchan granted a site for the erection of a place of worship and in 1846 the congregation of Broxburn Free Church took possession of their new church. Prior to this time worship had taken place in temporary accommodation consisting of two houses with the dividing partition removed to provide an adequate space. The population of the parish of Broxburn increased considerably from 1863 owing to the rise of the mineral oil industry. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Broxburn Free Church was renamed Broxburn West United Free Church and the congregation was transferred from the Free Church Presbytery of Linlithgow to the United Free Church Presbytery of Bathgate. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Broxburn West United Free Church became Broxburn West Church of Scotland. In 1975 Broxburn West was united with the congregation of Broxburn St Andrew's, under the name of Broxburn Church of Scotland. The united congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of West Lothian. |
