In 1735 the Associate Presbytery of Dunfermline and Kinross was petitioned by a number of residents of Kinross and the surrounding area requesting that they be provided with sermon, it wasn't however until 1737 that regular service was provided to the Kinross Seceders. John Swanston, the first minister of Kinross Associate Church was ordained in 1744 and at the Breach of 1747 the majority of the Kinross congregation took the Burgher side, and from this time Kinross Associate Church became Kinross West Burgher Congregation. In 1748 the church of Kinross West was erected, the congregation having prior to this time worshipped in the open air, and this building was later replaced in 1885 by a new church, built on the old site at a cost of £2700. In 1847 Kinross Burgher Congregation became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Kinross West United Presbyterian Church was renamed Kinross Erskine United Free Church and in 1906 a union was established between Kinross Erskine and Kinross Chalmers, to form the charge of Kinross West United Free Church. Further union followed in 1925 between the congregation of Kinross West United Free and Kinross East United Free, under the name of Kinross United Free Church. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Kinross United Free was renamed and in 1979 the congregation of Kinross Church of Scotland was formed by the union of Kinross East and Kinross West. Kinross Church of Scotland is under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Perth. |
