The congregation of Edzell Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Brechin, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister and the majority of the congregation of Edzell Parish Church adhered to the Free Church. A site upon which to build a church was refused however a local shoe maker gifted a corner of his land and it was here that the first church of Edzell Free Church was erected. A new church was later opened in 1900. Following the 1900 union between the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Edzell Free Church became Edzell United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Edzell United Free Church was renamed Edzell North Church of Scotland. In 1940 Edzell North was united with the congregation of Edzell South, under the name of Edzell Church of Scotland, and after the local union the former South church continued in use for congregational purposes. Further union followed in 1953 between the congregations of Edzell and Lethnot, to form the united charge of Edzell and Lethnot. The Lethnot church was abandoned after 1953 and in 1982 a link was established between Glenesk and Edzell and Lethnot. A further link followed in 1997 with Fern Carestoun Menmuir and the linked charge sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Angus. |
