It is thought that sermon in Milnathort was first obtained from the Antiburgher Presbytery of Perth and Dunfermline in 1756, and in 1759 the Antiburgher residents in the area petitioned the Synod for ordained ministers to preach to them. James Russell, the first minister of Milnathort Antiburgher Church , was ordained in 1764 and in that same year the church was built and opened. In 1847 the congregation became part of the United Presbyterian Church and in 1869 a new church was erected as a cost of £3000. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Milnathort United Presbyterian became Milnathort United Free Church and in 1927 the congregation of Orwell United Free was united with that of Milnathort. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Milnathort United Free became Milnathort Church of Scotland and in 1955 further union followed with the congregation of Orwell Church of Scotland, under the name of Orwell. |
