The congregation of Glencairn Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Penpont, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when Patrick Bowman, three elders, and a large number of the congregation of Glencairn Parish Church adhered to the Free Church. Initially they were granted use of the United Secession Church in Moniaive as a place of worship, until their own church was built and opened in December 1843. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Glencairn Free Church became Glencairn United Free Church and in 1911 a union was established with the congregation of Moniaive United Free, under the name of Glencairn and Moniaive United Free Church. After the local union both churches continued in use until 1919 when the Moniaive church was sold and converted for use as the War Memorial Institute. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Glencairn and Moniaive United Free Church was renamed Moniaive Church of Scotland and in 1957 a further union was established with the congregation of Glencairn Church of Scotland. The charge once again was named Glencairn and Moniaive and the united congregation was linked with Tynron in 1957. A further link followed in 1977 with Dunscore and the linked congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
