The congregation of Morebattle Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Kelso, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when a small group of Morebattle residents adhered to the Free Church. Initially, only occasional supply was granted by the Free Presbytery and worship took place in the open air, however in 1845 a church was built and additionally in that year the charge of Morebattle Free Church was sanctioned. The United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland united in 1900 to form the United Free Church, and the Morebattle congregation passed accordingly as Morebattle St Lawrence United Free Church. A few years later, in 1907, a union took place with the congregation of Morebattle Gateshaw Brae under the name of Morebattle United Free Church. After the local union the former Gateshaw Brae church was retained for worship. Upon the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Morebattle United Free became Morebattle St Aidan's Church of Scotland and further union followed in 1952 with the congregation of Morebattle St Lawrence, to form the session of Morebattle Church of Scotland. In 1963 a link was established with the charges of Hownam and Yetholm. But in 1972 the congregation at Morebattle united with that of Hownam, taking the name of Morebattle and Hownam Church of Scotland, which sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Jedburgh. |
