In 1739, in the parish of Madderty, there arose a dispute over the proposed moderation of Rev George Blaikie, who was presented to the then vacant charge. Although Rev Blaikie was not settled as minister of the parish, this did not prevent an accession from Madderty to the Associate Presbytery and another from Trinity Gask. Consequently in 1740 it was agreed that these two break away groups should be united into one congregation, initially under the name of Strathearn Associate Session. The church is believed to have been built in 1743 and in 1744 the name of the charge was changed to Kinkell Associate Session. John Muckersie, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained in 1747. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Church of Scotland in 1900, Kinkell Associate Session became Kinkell United Free Church and in 1915 a union was established with the congregation of Madderty to form the charge of Kinkell and Madderty United Free Church. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Madderty and Kinkell United Free was renamed Maddety High Church of Scotland and in 1936 the congregation was joined with that of Madderty Abbey. After this local union, under the name of Madderty Church of Scotland, both churches continued in use and were used alternately for public worship. In 1962 a link was established with the congregation of Trinity, Gask and Kinkell however this arrangement was later terminated in 1984 in favour of a linkage with Fowlis Wester and Monzie. The congregation of Madderty Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Perth. |
