The congregation of Glenisla Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Meigle, was established in 1849 when the majority of the population of Glenisla left the Established church and joined the Free Church of Scotland. A church to house the congregation was erected in 1849 and the charge was also sanctioned in the same year. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Glenisla Free Church became Glenisla United Free Church and in 1927, Glenisla United Free was linked with the congregation of Cray. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Glenisla United Free was renamed Glenisla North Church of Scotland and in 1941 the congregation was joined with that of Glenisla Parish Church. After the local union the united charge continued under the name of Glenisla Church of Scotland and the former North church was sold and later demolished. In 1967 Glenisla established a link with the charge of Kilry and further links followed in 1980 with Lintrathen, and in 1994 with the congregation of Airlie, Ruthven and Kingoldrum. The linked congregation is under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Angus. |
