On the 2nd May 1837, the Rev Matthew Fraser of Dundee reported to the Presbytery of Forfar that he had opened a church at Broughty Ferry. The secession families in Broughty Ferry at that time were required to travel 4 miles to Dundee to attend church however Robert Haldane, who had erected the building opened by Rev Fraser as an independent chapel, gave use of the property to the Secession Church. After a period of around 5 months grants were obtained from the Home Mission fund to help the congregation with expenses, and on 16 July 1838 the congregation was formally organised as Broughty Ferry United Secession Church. John Robb, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained in 1839. At the union of 1847 Broughty Ferry United Secession became part of the United Presbyterian Church and in September of that year a new church was erected. The church was the first to be built following the union and so the congregation henceforth became known as Broughty Ferry Union United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Broughty Ferry United Presbyterian became Broughty Ferry Union United Free Church and in 1925 Broughty Ferry Union United Free was joined with the congregation of Broughty Ferry West. After this local union the congregation continued under the name of Broughty Ferry West and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, the charge became Broughty Ferry West Church of Scotland. Further union followed in 1962 with Broughty Ferry St Stephen's, under the name of Broughty Ferry St Stephen's and West, and this congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dundee. |
