The congregation of Newbattle Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith, stemmed from Newton Grange Mission, which was established by Dalkeith Free Church in 1874. In 1880 a new church was built to replace the iron church which had been provided by the Home Mission Committee and in 1884 the Assembly sanctioned the congregation of Newbattle Free Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Church of Scotland in 1900, Newbattle Free Church became Newbattle United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Newbattle United Free was renamed Newtongrange Church of Scotland. In 1981 Newtongrange was linked with the congregation of Borthwick and the linked congregation of Newtongrange Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lothian. |
