The beginnings of Aberlady Secession Church can be traced back to the 1st July 1840 when inhabitants of Aberlady and the surrounding area petitioned the Presbytery of Edinburgh requesting the appointment of a preacher. Prior to 1843, when the church was opened, service was held in a malt barn, and mission preachers were stationed at Aberlady until the induction of the first minister of the charge, Robert Watt, in 1846. A new church was later erected in 1893. In 1900, following the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Aberlady Secession Church became Aberlady United Free Church, and at the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Aberlady was joined with the congregation of Aberlady Parish Church. After the union the former United Free Church was converted for use as the church hall and the building was sold a number of years later in 1970 for redevelopment purposes. |
