On the 24th April 1833 the Rev Robert Wilson was transferred by the Synod, from Kendal to Nicholson Street Church in Greenock. A number of the congregation of Nicholson Street objected to this call and consequently petitioned the Presbytery of Glasgow requesting that they be erected into a new congregation. The Nicholson Street session raised no objections and during the following month the request was granted and a stipend was promised to the new congregation of Greenock Union Street United Secession Church. In 1834 a new church was opened to house Greenock Nicholson Street and Thomas Finlayson, the first Minister of the congregation, was ordained in 1835. Greenock Union Street United Secession Church became part of the United Presbyterian Church in 1847. Following the union between the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Greenock Union Street United Presbyterian became Greenock Union Street United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Greenock Union Street United Free became Greenock Union Street Church of Scotland. In 1949 Union Street joined with the congregation of Sir Michael Street, under the name of Greenock the Union, and after this local union the former Union Street church continued in use as the place of worship. Further union followed in 1992 with the charge of Greenock St Andrew's, under the name of Greenock Ardgowan. The united congregation of Greenock Ardgowan sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Greenock. |
