The congregation of Memus Free Church, which sat wthin the Presbytery of Forfar, was established on July 9 1843, the year of the Disruption, when a group of Free Church adherents residing in the parishes of Cortachy, Kirriemuir, Oathlaw and Fern, met in a cart shed on West Memus Farm in the parish of Tannadice. Regular services were held from this day and a church was erected in the following year, which was later enlarged in 1891. The poulation surrounding Memus was widely scattered and latterly the members of Memus Free Church were drawn from eight different parishes. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Memus Free Church became Memus United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Memus United Free Church became Memus Church of Scotland. In 1945 Memus Church of Scotland joined with the congregation of Cortachy to form the session of Cortachy and Memus. After this local union both churches continued in use and futher union followed in 1954 with Glenprosen and Clova, under the name of The Glens Church of Scotland. In 1999 The Glens joined with charge of Kirriemuir Old to form the session of The Glens and Kirriemuir Old and this united congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Angus. |
