The congregation of Carmyllie Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister of the parish church of Carmyllie and a number of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. They initially struggled to secure a site upon which to erect a church and worship took place for a time in a temporary wooden church and also in a tent. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Church of Scotland in 1900, Carmyllie Free Church became Carmyllie United Free Church, and upon the 1929 union between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland, Carmyllie United Free was renamed Carmyllie West Church of Scotland. In 1943 Carmyllie West was joined with the congregation of Camyllie East, under the name of Carmyllie Church of Scotland. After the local union the former West Church continued in use as the place of worship and in 1983 a link was established with the charge of Arbilot and Colliston. The congregation of Carmyllie Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Angus. |
