On 5 September 1782 the Burgher Presbytery of Edinburgh received a petition from a number of residents in the district of Slateford, complaining of the lack of gospel preaching in the area and requesting that they be provided with sermon. The request was granted and in July 1783 the congregation of Slateford Burgher Church was formed. Worship initially took place at Larbour near Sighthill farm until 1785 when a church was built behind houses close to the water of Leith at Slateford. John Dick, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained in October 1786. In 1820 Slateford Burgher Church became Slateford United Associate Session and in 1847 the congregation became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Slateford United Presbyterian became Slateford United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland, Slateford United Free Church became Edinburgh Slateford Church of Scotland. In 1955 Edinburgh Slateford was transported to Longstone and adopted the name of Edinburgh Slateford Longstone Church of Scotland. The congregation of Edinburgh Slateford Longstone Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
