The congregation of Bothwell Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Hamilton, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption by local Free Church adherents. In 1844 a church and manse were erected and a new church was built a number of years later in 1860. In the beginning Bothwell Free Church supplied a wide area, including Bellshill, Uddingston and Blantyre, separate charges were however established in these locations and consequently the membership at Bothwell was reduced. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland Bothwell Free Church was renamed Bothwell Kirkfield United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Bothwell Kirkfield United Free became Bothwell Kirkfield Church of Scotland. In 1941 the congregation of Bothwell Kirkfield and Bothwell Wooddean were joined together under the name of Bothwell Kirkfield and Wooddean. After this local union the Kirkfield church remained in use as the place of worship. Further union later followed in 1976 with the charge of Bothwell St Brides to form the session of Bothwell Church of Scotland, Bothwell Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
