From 1844 Free Church services were conducted in a granary in the village of Newburgh by preachers from Aberdeen and the surrounding area. As a result a Free Church congregation was soon formed and a church was built in 1847-1848, 3 miles from Newburgh in the village of Foveran and in 1852 the charge of Foveran Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Ellon, was sanctioned. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Foveran United Presbyterian became Foveran United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Foveran United Free was renamed Foveran South Church of Scotland. In 1931 a union was established between the congregations of Foveran North and Foveran South, under the name of Foveran Church of Scotland. After this local union the former South church was demolished. The congregation of Foveran Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Gordon. |
