The congregation of Greenock St Andrew's Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Greenock, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when Dr J.J. Bonar, minister of St Andrew's Church extension charge, along with his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. The church building had a debt outstanding on it and so the creditors leased it to the Free Church congregation. After a time, when the Established Church did not redeem it, the church was sold to Greenock St Andrew's Free Church. The church however was later sold in 1881 when a new building was erected in the western area of the town. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Greenock St Andrew's Free Church became Greenock St Andrew's United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Greenock St Andrew's United Free became Greenock St Andrew's Church of Scotland. In 1967 a union was established with the congregation of Greenock Trinity, under the name of Greenock St Andrew's and further union followed in 1992 with the charge of Greenock the Union, to form the session of Greenock Ardgowan Church of Scotland. This congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Greenock. |
