Greyfriars Church, Glasgow, began as one of the earliest Secession congregations. The first minister, James Fisher, was the son-in-law of Ebenezer Erskine. By 1742 they were established in a newly built church in Shuttle Street and were known thereafter as the Shuttle Street congregation. On their removal in 1821 to Albion Street, near the site of the former Franciscan friary, they adopted the name of Greyfriars, and were successively Greyfriars United Presbyterian and Greyfriars United Free Church. The church terminated in 1951 on uniting with Alexandra Parade as Greyfriars and Alexandra Parade, itself terminated by dissolution in 1966. As a Church of Scotland charge it was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Clydesdale. |
