The congregation of Edinburgh New North Free Church was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when Charles Brown, minister of New North Church, and a large number of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. They worshipped for a number of months in Dr Lindsay Alexander's Independent Chapel in Argyle Square, from here they moved to Brighton Street Chapel until 1846 and then to Potterrow United Secession Church until 1848, when their own church was opened in Forrest Road. The congregation was very involved in mission work in the Cowgate, working from Mary's Chapel in Niddry Wynd prior to 1859 when Cowgate Free Church was sanctioned as a separate charge. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Church of Scotland in 1900, Edinburgh New North Free Church became Edinburgh New North United Free Church, and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, the congregation became Edinburgh New North Church of Scotland. In 1941 New North was joined with the congregation of Edinburgh Greyfriars to form part of the united charge of Greyfriars Church of Scotland, and further union followed in 1979 between Greyfriars and The Highland Church Tolbooth St John's, under the name of Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland. This congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
